The Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center is a world leader in
research to understand, treat and prevent cancer and other
life-threatening diseases. Founding members of the center are credited
with pioneering bone-marrow transplantation as a successful treatment
for leukemia and other blood diseases.
Fred Hutchinson is home to two Nobel laureates. Dr. E. Donnall
Thomas, M.D. was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in
1990 for his pioneering work on bone marrow transplantation and Dr.
Leland Hartwell, Ph.D. (our current director) was awarded the Nobel
Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2001 for work on the cell cycle.
